Claim evidence Reasoning

Beatty is purposely confusing when talking to Montag. When Bradbury states "God, what a pulse! I've got you going, have I, Montag. Jesus God, your pulse sounds like the day after the war. Everything but sirens and bells! Shall I talk some more? I like your look of panic. Swahili, Indian, English Lit., I speak them all. A kind of excellent dumb discourse, Willie!" (Bradbury 74). This quote illustrates Beatty using his deep knowledge of literature to confuse Montag by spewing literary references. This is Beatty's way to prepare Montag before he forces him to burn his house. This is a commonly used interrogation technique, confuse the subject until they are so muddled that they reveal/ do what they want you to do.

Fahrenheit 451 Discussion Notes (0-19)

Last Thursday we started to read Ray Bradbury's novel, Farenheight 451.
We are required to annotate it in sections of about 20 pages and return to class to discuss our findings and questions with our peers. We have read pages 1-19 and this is what we have found:

  • camera's could be in the vents shows an authoritarian society
  • animal metaphors are used throughout such as the snake hose and the pigeon birds
  • over population may be an issue
  • contradictory tones
  • prevalence if suicide shows an unhappy society
  • Montag is a conformist and Clarisse knocked him out of his falsely jovial existence
  • Montag is an instinctual man bc. he sensed Clarisse and the metal object on the floor.
  • set in a falsely utopian society
  • Clarisse triggers suspicion in montag
  • sleeping pills could be a means of control because everybody needs them to fall asleep
  • rain is complete opposite of fire shows change in thought that  montag will experience fire to water angry to  clam and pure. Will go from being a (bad guy) to a good pure person.
  • Clarisse proposes unusal questions and the rest of society is dark and depresed.
